Our Telegram Story

On 14th of July, an era is going to end in India. With SMS and internet taking over, India is  shutting down its 163 year old 'Telegram' or as we locals call it 'Taar' service. It is not viable, there are huge losses, and in the current scenario it is outdated, are some of the cited reasons. It feels like closing door on our history because it is not commercially viable.

Fair enough, but I don't want to move on without having a piece of history with me. After all, new is always based on the old. Hence, I thought of sending myself a telegram (sounds crazy, right?) When I discussed this idea with a colleague, she was equally enthusiastic about it. Soon she found herself at Taarghar (telegraph office) and that was when we realized that we were indeed serious about this. At first, the staff was amazed, confounded, and surprised at seeing someone other than them in the office. They could not believe that we simply wanted our share of history for keeps. Some questions and smiles later, we got going. Our enthusiasm was indeed contagious and soon the staff was excited. Their smiles indeed made our day. But nothing was more overwhelming than holding our telegrams. A telegram that was meant for us. We were jumping like excited bunch of kids who just got their first toy!

That's us with our piece of history and you have no idea how happy we are to have it. It is my sincere request to you to grab your piece before telegraph service is stopped in India or your corner of the world.

If our story has inspired you to send a telegram, please share it with me so that I can feature you on the blog. You can send in your pictures and story by mail (contact@theflirtingkaapi.com) and if you are publishing it on Twitter, FB, Instagram, do add  the #OurTelegramStory hashtag. I am really looking forward to read your stories. :)

It is the end of an era. Stop. We can preserve a piece of this era. Stop.

And here's the link of a friend who also has a telegram story to tell! Read Vinita's post here. :)

    1. It is really easy Swati, simply find a BSNL office/ post office closest to you that still provides the service of telegram. Reach there before 14th July and they will help you in the best possible way.

  7. It's sad that as I'm writing this comment, the Telegram service is a thing of the past. My family had so much good and bad news sent through telegrams...
I agree with Sayantini; I've never seen a telegram in my life so I'm glad you've actually posted this :D
