The first part : "On her Own"
Contd :
Years of undisputed dedication, innumerable rehearsals, numerous sacrifices and constant nurturing of a dream, she thought she was reducing the distance between her dream and it turning into reality. It was no small feat. When everyone was deciding what to do wear for the date that weekend, she was practicing her steps or building her stamina. Day in, day out, she just breathed dance, music, steps & rhythm. All she wanted was to be the next big thing on the stage.
I put my makeup on a Saturday night
I try to make it happen
Try to make it all right
I know I make mistakes
I'm living life day to day
It's never really easy but it's ok
Wake Up Wake Up
On a Saturday night
Could be New York
Maybe Hollywood and Vine
London, Paris maybe Tokyo
There's something going on anywhere I go
Tonight
Tonight
Yeah, tonight
The city's restless
It's all around me
People in motion
Sick of all the same routines
And they need to go
They need to get away
Tonight
I put my makeup on a Saturday night
I try to make it happen
Try to make it all right
I know I make mistakes
I'm living life day to day
It's never really easy but it's ok
Wake Up Wake Up
On a Saturday night
Could be New York
Maybe Hollywood and Vine
London, Paris maybe Tokyo
There's something going on anywhere I go
Tonight
Tonight
Yeah, tonight
People all around you
Everywhere that you go
People all around you
They don't really know you
Everybody watching like it's some kind of show
Everybody's watching
They don't really know you now
And forever
Wake Up Wake Up
Wake Up Wake Up
On a Saturday night
Could be New York
Maybe Hollywood and Vine
London, Paris maybe Tokyo
There's something going on anywhere I go
Wake Up Wake Up
On a Saturday night
Could be New York
Maybe Hollywood and Vine
London, Paris maybe Tokyo
There's something going on anywhere
I go
Tonight
Tonight
Yeah, tonight
The second part : "Big Things"
She had started dancing even before she started walking! At 8, she won her first dance competition. At 12, her calender was full of dance workshops and competitions. At 16, when girls were confused about their lipstick shade, she was busy scouting for the proper dancing shoes. At 18, she was the youngest girl to make it through the School of Arts and her unwavering efforts saw her pass out with flying colors at 20. Without a doubt, she got through the acclaimed Silver Troupe. She was touted as the next big thing!

It was like as if she was a programmed machine, whose only code was to practice, perform, practice and perform. The rush and heady feeling of being on the stage with her troupe, doing all the concerts, was her motivation and pushed her to raise the benchmark with every performance.
All was going well, then why suddenly did she find herself in the bar, alone, with alcohol for her company, with just one wish i.e. to lose herself in the alcohol so that she won't be able to listen to what they were saying, doubting her and criticizing her efforts. The reason seemed to evade her. What did they know about her? Who gave them the right to overlook her efforts and simply criticize just for the sake of it.
Do they know that she loves break dance more than she loves jive? Do they know, she recently had a break up because he wasn't able to compete with her passion for dance? That she hasn't met her parents even once in the last 4 years, just so that she gives full attention to her dance? Do they know all this? No! No one knows this, they don't know her deepest fears, or secret of simple joys. All they know is that she is progressing fast. Within a year she has become the lead from just an extra warming the bench and the director's liking for her has got nothing to do with that.
She was tired of this. She was talented, the best available dancer out there. Instead of realizing her worth, all they were interested in pulling her down. She was not gifted, she transformed herself to be being gift. It wasn't easy, but she strove for it, every second, every time. What should she do now? Just throw away all of that just because everyone thinks she is just an exaggerated piece of young ass!
No. She was a survivor, a fighter. Dave, her best friend always used to tell her that. She was his muse, his inspiration. How can an inspiration be weak? His songs were always inspired from her dancing and Antoniette's paintings. She can't just prove him wrong. She was happy that he has excelled in life, that his talent has been finally accepted and appreciated. When will her day come?
Call it co-incidence or fate, Dave's song was being played in the bar. The song which according to him was a lyrical description of her. Dance was her get-a-way. Her life and her passion. Whenever she used to feel down, she used to let go of everything and dance with abandon. On one such occasion, he witnessed her abandoned glory, her unabashed giving away of emotions and he had penned this song. Her favorite song.
There's people talking
They talk about me
They know my name
They think they know everything
But they don't know anything
About me
They talk about me
They know my name
They think they know everything
But they don't know anything
About me
Give me a dance floor
Give me a dj
Play me a record
Forget what they say
Cause I need to go
Need to getaway tonight
Give me a dj
Play me a record
Forget what they say
Cause I need to go
Need to getaway tonight

How did she forget her spirit. Dave was right. It is about waking up, letting go and living in the moment. Who cares about the world. It is her moment, her time and she will decide whether she is good or not. How did she forget it, when she was the one who has taught Dave these things.
They will always talk, it is entertainment for them. Why should she pay attention to them. She has things to do, dreams to be fulfilled. All she needs to do is focus, try hard and let go. A smile formed on her lips. That gleam in her eye returned. She was a fighter and achiever, but achievers also need to cool their heels sometimes, hibernate and start afresh. Yes, she will do that.
But, first she needs to call up Dave, after all, her support system again managed to give her the needed boost.
Thank You Dave! Thank You.
With smile on her face, grace in her gait and gleam in her eye, Shina left the bar, not to conquer the world but to try her best and seduce the world. After all, dreams are not meant to be chased, they are meant to be seduced and she will get her glory; all she needs to do is hibernate, prepare and enjoy this moment.
All she needs to do is wake up!
